What is Vesicoamniotic Shunt?

What is Vesicoamniotic Shunt?

Vesicoamniotic shunt is the name given to the surgery to create a connection that cannot exist between the urinary bladder, that is, the bladder and the amniotic sac of a baby in the mother’s womb. Since the baby’s urine cannot be discharged in the normal way, it allows it to be emptied into the amniotic fluid in a different way. This surgery is performed for fetuses with post-urethral stenosis. In this article, we have compiled what you need to know about vesicoamniotic shunt.

Why is Vesicoamniotic Shunt Done?

Vesicoamniotic singing therapy is applied in diseases called PUV (posterior urethral valve) or LUTO (lower urinary tract obstruction). If the procedure is not done, the baby’s kidneys will lose their function until birth and the baby will die from kidney failure after birth. Since the fetus cannot urinate, the amniotic fluid decreases and the development of the lungs lags behind. Therefore, it is important to diagnose the disease correctly and determine the appropriate treatment methods.

A vesicoamniotic shunt creates a bypass, an alternative way for urine to bypass the obstruction. In this way, it is ensured that the urine flows into the amniotic cavity and the kidney functions are preserved.

Who Is Vesicoamniotic Shunt Performed?

Vesicoamniotic shunt is a treatment method that can save the life of the prenatal baby. Vesicoamniotic shunt is a surgery in which a connection is created between an unborn baby’s urinary bladder (bladder) and amniotic sac.

It is generally used for the treatment of strictures after the urinary bladder, which occurs in male babies, in the womb. If this shunt operation is not performed on the urinary bladder in these fetuses, the kidney remains under high pressure and kidney failure develops.

The necessity of this surgery arises when diseases such as PUV and LUTO are detected in the mother’s womb. At this point, the importance of detailed ultrasound performed by the perinatology specialist is emphasized once again. With a successful vescoamniotic shunt surgery at the appropriate time, it is possible to save the baby’s kidneys.

How is Vesicoamniotic Shunt Treated?

Vesicoamniotic shunt is a surgery in which an artificial connection is created between the urinary bladder and amniotic sac of an unborn baby. The stages of this surgery are as follows;

1. Diagnosis: In the detailed ultrasound performed during pregnancy, stenosis or immaturity (atresia) at the exit of the baby’s urinary bladder is detected. In this case, the baby’s bladder becomes abnormally large.

2. Genetic examination: Since there is a high probability of genetic disease in such fetuses, genetic examination is performed first.

3. Surgical Intervention: Depending on the baby’s condition, surgical planning is performed if it is suitable for surgical intervention. This surgical procedure is performed under local anesthesia. The aim of the surgery is to create another new way for the urine to go out.

4. Delivery and postpartum: After the surgical intervention, the baby’s condition is closely followed up until delivery. After the birth, the final operation to open the urinary tract is performed by the pediatric urology.

In this process, it is important to be guided by an experienced team for correct diagnosis and treatment. Correct treatment of vesicoamniotic shunt is of great importance in terms of maintaining the health of the baby and improving the quality of life.
