What are discharges during pregnancy? How Is It Treated?

Discharge during pregnancy is known as a normal condition that women may experience during pregnancy. Pregnancy hormones cause various changes in the body, and these may manifest themselves as discharge in the genital area. Generally, there may be an increase in discharge due to hormonal changes during pregnancy. In some cases, vaginal discharge must be treated. In this article, we have compiled what you need to know about discharge during pregnancy.

How Does Discharge Happen During Pregnancy?

Discharge during pregnancy may be transparent, white or slightly yellow. If it is not accompanied by symptoms such as odor and itching and the discharge is not of a different color and consistency than normal, it is usually not a cause for concern. However, it should be known that the amount will increase in pregnancy.

However, discharge during pregnancy may not always be normal, and in some cases, it may be a sign of an underlying infection or other health problem. We can list the symptoms that should be consulted to a doctor in case of discharge as follows:

• The discharge becomes thick or foul-smelling.

• Having uncomfortable symptoms such as itching, burning or irritation

• Seeing a green, brown or bloody discharge

• Pain in the lower abdomen or pelvic region

These symptoms may indicate potential problems such as infection and may affect health during pregnancy. Therefore, it is important to consult a doctor if any of these symptoms are observed. The doctor will help maintain the health of the expectant mother and baby by providing appropriate diagnosis and treatment.

What are the causes of discharge during pregnancy?

Many women experience an increase in vaginal discharge during pregnancy. This increase is quite normal in general terms. The reason for this is that the blood flow to the vaginal area increases, the cervix and vaginal wall soften, and the baby’s head puts pressure on this area in the following weeks. This increase in discharge also prevents an infection, if any, from reaching the upper areas. We can list the additional common causes of discharge during pregnancy as follows:

• It is most often physiological, that is, normal.

• Fungal infections

• Group B streptococcal bacterial colonization

• Gardnerella infection (bacterial vaginosis)

• Early stages of miscarriage

• Serious infections such as chlamydia and gonorrhea

• Cervicitis, that is, cervical infection

• Coming from the baby’s water can be confused with the discharge

How is Vaginal Hygiene Provided During Pregnancy?

During pregnancy, the importance of vaginal hygiene increases even more. Therefore, special attention should be paid to hygiene. We can list the things that need to be done to maintain vaginal hygiene during pregnancy as follows:

• Not using tampons

• Prefer underwear that absorbs discharge (can be 100% cotton underwear)

• Not having a vaginal douche (the most important point is not to get soap or water into the vagina)

• Not using unhealthy hygiene products

• When cleaning during the toilet, it should be wiped only once from front to back. If there is a need to wipe again, it is wiped in the same way with new toilet paper.

• Eating healthy is also important. It is necessary to avoid foods containing excess glucose, which causes fungus.

• Unnecessary use of antibiotics should be avoided

What Does Discharge Color Mean During Pregnancy?

The color of discharge during pregnancy is often an important indicator. During this period, hormonal changes in the body may cause an increase in vaginal secretions, which may affect the color and consistency of the discharge. In some cases, the color of the discharge appears different and this may cause various problems. We can list the colors and meanings of discharge during pregnancy as follows:

• Greenish and foamy discharge: Discharge of this color is usually a sign of a serious infection and requires examination.

• Brown or bloody discharge: Light bleeding may be normal during pregnancy. However, heavy or persistent bleeding may indicate a risk of miscarriage or other serious problems and may require immediate medical attention.

• Extremely thick or foul-smelling discharge: Thick and foul-smelling discharge may be a sign of an infection and may require treatment.

• Itching with white discharge: It requires examination and treatment.

It is important to contact a doctor if any worrisome type of discharge is noticed or if there are other symptoms such as itching, burning, pain or fever.

How is Discharge Treatment Applied in Pregnancy?

Treatment of discharge during pregnancy varies depending on the cause. Depending on the type of infection, it is considered healthier to use vaginal suppositories or cream as much as possible and, if possible, to make a treatment plan after the first 8 weeks. If the cause is not an infection but a different cause, a treatment plan can be made according to the cause of the discharge.
